Charles L. Valencik, Sr., age 86 of Wilmington, DE., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 19, 2014.
Chuck was born on October 11, 1927 in Roaring Creek, PA., to the late Frank and Edna (Getrich). He graduated from Locust Township High School, Columbia County, PA., in 1943 where he lettered in four sports all four years. Upon graduation, Chuck enlisted with the US Navy
where he served 3 separate tours of duty between 1945 and 1952.
During his service, he worked as a chef for the officers' mess on the USS Roanoke. After his last honorable discharge from the Navy, Chuck worked in construction as an operating engineer in Local 452. He was the head crane operator for the second span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Upon his retirement, he founded Valco Development, Inc. and developed the Amberwood subdivision in Bear, DE. In 1950, Chuck married the love of his life, Julie Rostkowski. They moved to Delaware to raise their family, who remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Chuck was involved in coaching youth sports, including Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and intramural basketball. He was a devoted parishioner at St. John the Beloved Church, serving as an usher for over 50 years.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Julie; his daughter Diane Reksten (Harald); sons Charles, Jr. (Paula) and Mark (Kim); and his daughter Janet; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Eugene and Hubert; and sisters, Agatha Holman and Mildred Valencik. In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Valencik.
Family and Friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 from 10:00am - 11:45am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington at 12:00pm. Committal services will follow in the chapel at All Saints Cemetery.
