Edward Lawrence Connors
Edward Lawrence Connors, age 83, of Wilmington, died Friday, August 16, 2013 at home surrounded by his family. He was born 1930 in Chester, PA and was the son of the late Leo A. and Margaret C. (Mundy) Connors.
Ed attended St. Robert's Grammar School and graduated in 1947 from St. James High School in Chester, PA, where he played basketball. He graduated in 1951 with a B.S. in Business Administration from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA, where he also played basketball. From 1951-1954, he served his country in the Army during the Korean War
. Upon his discharge as a 2nd Lieutenant, he was employed by DuPont in Wilmington for 38 years, retiring in 1992 as a Financial Systems Consultant. In addition, he worked part time for many years at the Foulk and Naaman's Liquor Store.
Ed coached boys' basketball at Immaculate Heart of Mary for several years. He was a member of the Schola Cantorum, an all male choir formed in 1956 that continued for over 40 years. Ed loved to sing and his tenor voice was well suited to the Irish songs he loved. He often sang at family and friends' gatherings. After his retirement, he enjoyed getting together with friends at the Hideaway and Hosie's Place, and organizing the annual Ed Connors' Old-timers' Christmas lunch for his fellow DuPont retirees and employees of the Chemicals and Pigments business.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen Stoerlein Connors; five children, Kevin Connors (Lynn) of Thornton, PA, Kristanne Pond (Nigel) of Wilmington, DE, Paul Connors of Havertown, PA, Michelle Jones (Edward) of Wilmington, DE, and Stephen Connors (Victoria) of Washington, D.C. and five grandchildren: Emily and Peter Connors, Greta Jones, and Joseph and Stephen Connors and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition he is survived by his sister, Madeleine Pierce, and brother, Francis Connors. Ed was predeceased by infant son, Terrence, his brother, Leo Connors, and sister, Margaret Ryan.
The family extends their most sincere gratitude to the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice, especially Keith and Wendy, to Dr. Bernard King and Dr. Kathir Suppiah and staff for their many kindnesses to Ed during his care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 23rd at 11:00 am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Liftwood, where visitation will begin at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in St. Thomas the Apostle Church Cemetery, 430 Valleybrook Road, Glen Mills, PA. Family and friends may visit at the Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington on Thursday, August 22nd from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Ministry of Caring, 506 N. Church St., Wilmington, DE 19801-4812 or Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish.
