Of Vero Beach, FL, died in the company of his family on
Friday, November 16th in Newark, DE due to complications from pneumonia. He was 86 years old.
A perennial source of passion, energy, humor and wit, Ed was born on April 1, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA. His parents were Henry Ware Jones Jr. and Elizabeth Prentiss Jones. His boyhood years were spent in the Spring Glen neighborhood of Hamden, CT and he graduated from Hopkins School, Class of 1944. Upon an early graduation, Ed was already enlisted in the US Marine Corp
. He became a combat veteran of WWII
serving with the 6th Marine Division, in the Okinawa campaign, and post war in China. Ed furthered his military service earning a US Naval Air Corp commission in 1951 and was a fighter-bomber pilot on two aircraft carrier tours with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean. He continued Navy service as a reserve officer beginning in 1959 and flew twin engine anti-submarine patrols from Floyd Bennett Field in New York until 1966.
A member of "The Greatest Generation", Ed pursued his education after WWII at the University of Connecticut with the class of 1950 and graduated with a BA in Psychology. Ed and Margaret MacKay Malcom were married in 1952 and had three sons. The family resided in Wallingford CT for many years. He was predeceased by Margaret in 1983.
Ed's civilian work career was in life insurance sales, and later licensed securities sales, beginning at Connecticut Mutual in Hartford and New Haven, CT; later at Root & Boyd in Waterbury CT and lastly at Killam & Sperry in Wallingford CT before his retirement to Vero Beach, FL in 1989.
Ed is affectionately known by many nicknames; Eddie, Tink, ET, Echo Tango, G-Pa, Poppy and of course Dad. His is survived by a brother, Henry Ware Jones III, and a sister Barbara Jones Hale both of Wallingford CT. He also leaves three sons and their spouses - Brian C. and
Susan R. Jones of New Hartford, CT, Edward B. and Lorraine D. Jones of Wilmington, DE and Peter M. and Patricia W. Jones of Newark, DE; six grandchildren - Jennifer Lorber (and husband Eric Lorber), Daniel Jones, Robert Jones (and wife Megan Jones), Benham Jones, Kathryn Jones and Christopher Jones; and a great-granddaughter - Delaney MacKay Lorber. In addition he leaves several nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.
