Elizabeth (Betty) Gillis Porter

Betty Porter, 87, of Wilmington, DE., was received into the hands of her Lord on Saturday, July 19, after a long illness. She was born in Wilmington, DE., to the late Ernest Lee and Beulah Matilda Gillis.

Betty graduated with high honors from Wilmington High School in 1942. She served as Vice President of her senior class. After high school, Betty was employed by Prudential Life Insurance Company. Betty was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and most recently St. David's Episcopal Church. She and her husband, Jim, raised their family in Holiday Hills, North Wilmington.She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who taught her family the meaning of love, kindness and empathy for others.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur James R. Porter and a sister, Helen Gillis Coyle. Betty is survived by her three daughters, Jean Porter Wheeler of North Wilmington, June Porter Gallagher (John), of North Wilmington, and Joan Porter Jannaman (Len) of TN. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Jay, Jaime, Steven, Joni, Will, John, Mark, Greg and three great grandchildren, Grady, Anna, and Leo.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 21, 2014 from 10-11 am at St. David's Episcopal Church, 2320 Grubb Road, Wilm., DE 19810 followed immediately by funeral service at 11 a.m. Private burial will be held on Tuesday at the Delaware veterans Cemetery.
