Frank P. Dills
One of the last of the Iwo Jima Survivors, Frank P. Dills of Newark, DE, passed away August 22nd, 2013 at Millcroft Nursing Home. He was a member of the Newark VFW
post and American Legion. Frank was born in Avoca Pa in 1926. He attended St. Mary's School, Avoca High School and Eckels Mortuary College in Philadelphia. Frank opened a funeral home in Duryea, PA and operated it until he moved to Delaware in 1976 where he resided until his death. He was a veteran of the U.S Navy on the USS Carteret, where he served in the Pacific and witnessed the raising of the flag on the Island of Iwo Jima. He was one of two children and his brother Joseph currently resides in Waymart, PA with his wife Patsy on Elk Lake where Frank visited frequently.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lois; son, Patrick Geary Dills and his wife Denise of Chicago; daughter, Molly and her husband Mark Vietri; son-in-law, Robert Myrthel; 7 grandchildren: Connor Myrthel, John P Dills, Megan E. Dills Johnson, Anne C. Dills, Ryan P. Vietri, Meg M. Vietri, and Gabrielle F. Vietri; four great grandchildren; and his beloved dog Bo Bo. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kerry Jane Myrthel.
Commital services with military honors and burial will be held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE on Tuesday August 27th at 2pm.
