Gilbert N. Schofield
Gilbert N. Schofield, 86, of Hockessin, DE passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 following a brief illness. Born in New Bedford, MA, he was the son of the late Robert M. and Jeanne B. Norwood Schofield.
Gilbert proudly served his country during WWII
from 1944 to 1945 as a member of the U.S. Navy
stationed on the Island of Guam. He was a 1951 graduate of New Bedford Institute of Textiles and Technology. Gilbert retired in 1985 after 34 years with DuPont Textile Fibers Division, where he worked as a Chemist, Manufacturing Supervisor and a Technical Service Specialist in the Textile Fibers Division. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and family vacations in Cape Cod and the Westport area where he was raised. Gilbert was actively engaged in coaching Little League football and baseball teams while assigned to various Textile Fibers locations. He coached the Seaford Legionnaire Basketball team in the Delmarva Basketball League. He was also a former leader of the Boys Scout Troop #528 in Wilmington, DE.
Gilbert is survived by his sons, David Schofield and his wife Nancy of Salisbury, MD, Andrew Schofield and his wife Mary Ellen of Bear, DE and James Schofield and his wife Mara of High Point, NC; daughter, Jane Freeman of Palmyra, PA and his brother, Robert and his wife Val of Westport, MA. He was also the proud grandfather of 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren and has many extended family members currently living in New England. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years Helen Billington Schofield; brothers, Milton, David, Bradford and Grant.
The family of Mr. Schofield would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Cokesbury Village and Delaware Hospice for the care and comfort that they provided their father.
Funeral Services will be celebrated on Saturday, November 16th at 2:00pm at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE, where family and friends may call from 1:00 to 2:00pm. Interment will be held privately.
