Harold S. White

Age 95 of Lewes, formerly of Georgetown, passed away on Monday, August 5 at 1:09 A.M. He was predeceased in 2000 by his wife of 51 years, Doris Gifford White, and in 2010 by his daughter Linda Elliott.

Mr. White retired in 1979 from Diamond State Telephone, serving the last 25 years as his company's Sussex County manager. He was selected by his peers to receive the company's "Good Neighbor Award" for outstanding community service.

Harold was a World War II veteran, having served with a U.S. Navy mobile amphibious repair unit while participating in the Normandy Invasion of France.

Past president memberships include the Georgetown Little League, Georgetown P.T.A., Sussex United Fund, and Georgetown Rotary Club. He was a also a member for Franklin Lodge A.F. & A.M. No.12, Friends of the Claymont Stone School, Delaware Sports Hall of Fame Association, Telephone Pioneers of America, American Legion Post No. 28, Veterans of Foreign Wars-Del., Georgetown Historical Society, Lewes Historical Society, Fort Miles Historical Association, and The Lewes Men's Chorus.

As a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Georgetown, Harold sang in the chancel choir for 43 years. Upon moving to Lewes, he continued singing in Bethel United Methodist's choir until age 92. Locals will remember him for his fine baritone voice that he was able to use into his 90's as a soloist.

In addition to his love of music, Harold White was an avid bridge player, golfer, and sports fan. In particular, Harold was an ardent Phillies supporter, watching them on TV in the last week of his life. He was also known as the "Voice of Sussex Central High School," where he announced basketball games in the 1980's.

Harold is survived by a son Grier White and his wife Jeannine and grandsons Evan Elliott of Ocean City MD, Keith White of Lewes, DE, and Michael White of Bear, DE.

A funeral service for Mr. White will be held Friday, August 9 at 11 A.M. at Bethel United Methodist Church, 129 W 4th Street, Lewes, DE with visitation one hour prior to services. Visitation will also be held on Thursday, August 8 from 4 to 7 P.M at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE. Burial with military honors will be held at 3 P.M. on Friday at the Union Cemetery, E. Adams St, Georgetown, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 102 E. Laurel, Georgetown, DE 19958 or to the Bethel United Methodist Church, 129 W. 4th Street, Lewes, DE 19958.
