Isaac G. Cleaver II
Named after his grandfather, but known to everyone as IG, Isaac G. Cleaver passed away on Wed. July 10, 2013 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease and dementia. Prior to this journey, IG was a positive person who was always active & fit, his favorite sports being hunting, tennis, golf, jogging and body surfing at the beach.
IG is the son of Eleanor D. Cleaver and was predeceased by his father Frederick R. Cleaver, Sr. and older brother Frederick R. Cleaver, Jr. He grew up in Odessa, DE and spent much of his time on the family farm on route 9 beside the Appoquinimink Creek. His childhood was spent swimming in the creek, fishing, duck and dove hunting, running through the fields with his 2 brothers and friends and spending summers at the beach with family.
IG graduated from Middletown High School in 1965, then obtained a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Delaware in 1970. He began his career with the Bank of Delaware, now PNC Bank, eventually managing the Construction and Commercial Real Estate Loan Dept., and working with local government to finance major commercial and residential projects.
In 1982 he was appointed Director of Finance for the City of Wilmington, serving for 5 ½ years under Mayors William T. McLaughlin and Daniel S. Frawley. During his tenure he became a well known and respected member of the Delaware business community. Among other responsibilities he chaired the Board of Pensions and Retirement, was Vice Chairman of the Planning Commission, Treasurer of the Wilmington Parking Authority, the Brandywine Gateway Corp., and the Christina Gateway Corp. and served on several other boards including the Wilmington Economic Development Board, Wilmington Small Business Development Corp., Industrial Development Revenue Bond Committee and the Design Review Commission and Administrative Board.
In 1987 IG became V.P. and Senior Commercial Real Estate Loan Officer at the Delaware Trust Co.; moved to P. Gerald White, Inc. in 1989 as a V.P. of Commercial and Industrial sales; and then became a Commercial Real Estate Broker with Bellevue Realty Co. in 1996. At Bellevue he concentrated on the sale and leasing of industrial and commercial properties and was active in commercial real estate organizations.
IG deeply loved his family and cherished his friends, spending as much time with them as possible before becoming home bound. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Suzanne Clevenger; beloved son Matthew Llewellyn; his brother Jon Christopher and wife Lorraine; sister-in-law Paulette Cleaver Lazzaro and husband Ralph; sister-in-law Diane Clevenger Pease and husband Jim. He is also survived by 8 nieces and nephews: Jon Cleaver and wife Tammie; Scott Cleaver; F.R. Cleaver III (Robie) and wife Cindy; Kelly Cleaver Jones and husband Ed; Shannon Cleaver Fowler and husband Rob; Susan Cleaver Shea; Alexandra Pease and Nick Pease. He is also survived by 9 great nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday August 10, 2013 at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Pennsylvania Ave. in Wilmington at 11:00 AM. A reception will immediately follow the service. For those unable to attend the reception, the family will receive friends from 10:30 AM until 11:00 AM.
