James Arnold Murphy(1933 - 2013)

James Arnold Murphy

At age 79, died Sunday, April 28, 2013, in Christiana Hospital from complications following surgery. He was born in Kewanee, Ill, son of the late Arlene Lippert Murphy and Alphonse Murphy. Jim attended Kewanee High School, where he played clarinet in the band. After graduating from the University of Illinois in 1955, he served in the US Army at Ft Knox, KY. He moved to Delaware where he worked ten years for Joseph Bancroft and Sons as a research supervisor. He met Anne Bryson and on December 22, 1962 they were married at Old Swedes Episcopal Church. In 1966 Jim went to work for the Dupont Co in the Textile Fibers Dept. where as a Technical Marketing Consultant, he played a key role in assuring the production quality of Lycra, retiring after 33 years in 1999.

Throughout his life, Jim especially enjoyed physical and outdoor activities: handball, squash, and tennis in the earlier years, and later fishing with his son Jay. He was an avid skier and for years joined friends on an annual ski trip to locations throughout North America. After retirement he became a respectable golfer.

Jim was preceded in death in 1999 by his daughter, Lee. He is survived by his wife Anne, son James, granddaughters Julianna and Alessandra, his brother Tom, half-siblings John Murphy, Catherine Stewart, and Mary Naughton; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jim played an active role at St Paul's United Methodist Church,, serving on the Council of Ministries, United Methodist Men, Thursday Morning Work Crew, and Head Usher.

The family would like to thank the staff of Christiana Hospital and Wilmington General Hospital for their professional and compassionate care for Jim over the past several weeks.

A memorial service followed by a reception will be held at St Paul's United Methodist Church, 1314 Foulk Road, Wilm., DE 19803 on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 2 pm. Private interment will be at North East Cemetery, North East MD.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that any donations in Jim's memory be made to the church.
