Jane McIntosh (Clune) Normandeau RN

Jane McIntosh (Clune) Normandeau, RN

AGE: 88 • Wilmington

Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, age 88, died peacefully, May 18, 2014 at Forwood Manor from complications of a stroke suffered in 2012 after a period of declining health.

Jane was born in Springfield, MA to Louise and William McIntosh. She was preceded in death by her sister, Ethel Estabrook. Jane received her nursing degree in 1947 from Springfield Hospital School of Nursing. She loved nursing throughout her life, starting as a maternity nurse early in her career (Wesson Maternity Hospital, Springfield MA), serving as a school nurse and as a private duty nurse in Cazenovia NY, and later in her life, as a volunteer for the Christiana Care Health System Infant Hearing Assessment Program for twelve years during which time the program received the Governor's Award for Delaware Volunteers. Children and animals were definitely a passion in her life and career. Jane's sewing skills, artistic talents and gregarious personality motivated her to volunteer for the Delaware Children's Theatre for many years, especially when her youngest grandson was a performer there. Jane shared her great smile and vivacious, caring personality with everyone, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who remember her as a mother and grandmother and GiGi who taught them great life skills, especially how to have fun and smile through life. She was a believer in "eat dessert first" with champagne! She could be counted on to find four-leaf clovers, drive grandchildren to piano lessons, put together puzzles and build sand castles for hours at annual beach trips, hang wallpaper, wire a lamp, sew couture prom dresses, cook (no one can forget her famous pita chips and lemon bars), ski the black diamond trails, and always make the best of things in difficult situations: her joie de vivre was infectious. Lady Jane tap-danced, power-walked five miles a day and skipped rope until well into her 80's. You could always find her at the Highland Games in any state she lived in. Fearless and full of adventure, at sixty-five, Jane drove cross-country by herself in her vintage green '78 caddie, listening to Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller on her super 8 tape deck and eating Reece's peanut butter cups and M and M's. Jane loved being at the beach any time of the year and truly loved her years raising her family and living in the beautiful upstate New York village of Cazenovia.

Jane leaves her beloved and devoted husband, Norm, whom she has known since elementary school and married when she was 79 and he was 80. She also leaves to celebrate her life three children: Christine (David) Warheit of Wilmington DE, Robin (Charlie) Haaf of Pompey NY and James (Terri) Clune of Chicago as well as her adored six grandchildren and four great grandchildren: Matthew (Jessica) Chastain (parents of Emma Jane and Olivia Grace) of West Grove PA, Ben Warheit of NYC, CR (Hollie) Haaf, (parents of Madalyn and Carson) of Pompey NY, Jennifer Haaf of Pompey NY, Michael Clune of Chicago and Katy (Matt) VanVliet of Chicago. Jane is also survived by dear cousins Flora Wallace and Linda Wallace Neilson as well as dear sisters-in-law Christine Clune and Francis (Robert) McGarry and brother-in-law Walter Clune, niece and god-daughter Christine (Richard) DesLauriers and nephew Walter Clune. Treasured, life-long friends Tuddy, Janet and Denise and their children will never forget her.

Jane leaves us with memories that make us smile and a legacy of making a difference in the lives of others. The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Forwood Manor (Wilmington DE) whose kindness, care and compassion towards our mother over the last two years of her life is truly appreciated and will never be forgotten. Compassionate Care Hospice provided valued end of life care. Humanity Gifts Registry will receive her body.

Contributions to her favorite charities in her memory should be sent to the Delaware Children's Theatre, 1014 Delaware Ave, Wilmington, DE, 19806 or Faithful Friends, 12-A Germay Dr, Wilmington DE 19804 (or your local animal shelter).

A celebration of her life and memorial service will take place at a later date.
