Jessie Rowlenson Marsh
Jessie Rowlenson Marsh died peacefully on Saturday, Mar 2, 2013 at the Methodist Country House.
She was born in Baltimore, MD, to Edwin R. and Lillie M. (Denny) Rowlenson. Her high school yearbook predicted "there's never a dull moment when Jessie's around" and so her long life proved. In 1941 she married Cerdric E. Marsh and came to Wilmington as a bride. She and Cerd resided in Deerhurst for over 50 years prior to moving to the Country House. They enjoyed 70 happy years of marriage. Always gregarious, she was a frequent organizer of events for the community, church, PTA, New Century Club, and Delaware Photographic Society which declared her a fellow and honorary member.
Jessie's love of music started as a small child singing solos. She studied voice at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and continued singing culminating with 25 years in the Westminster Presbyterian Church Choir. For a number of years Jessie served on the board of the Wilmington Community Concert Assoc. on the artist selection and membership committees. History and antiques were Jessie's hobbies. She served as a Spring Guide at Winterthur Museum for 18 years; enjoyed part time work as a Turn-Key Sales Associate; and co-founded "Antiques and Collectables," a unique part of the annual Westminster Church Bazaar. Jessie's concern and respect for education was evidenced by her support of her husband's many civic roles with the Alfred I. DuPont School District, her Sunday school teaching, and scout leadership—both Brownies and Cubs. Of all her interests, family came first. She not only cared for her immediate family but also parents and aunts. When her nest was empty she became a member of the Auxiliary of Gilpin Hall where she was a president and founder of the gift shop. She remained active there until her death.
Jessie was predeceased by her husband. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Barbara Fedeler and husband Jerry of Wilmington, her son Cerdric R. and wife Nancy of Wilmot, NH; her five grandchildren: Eric Fedeler and friend Lauren Phillips of San Francisco, CA; Amy Fedeler of Wilmington; Cynthia Marsh of Wilmot, NH; Allison Marsh of Medford, MA; and Laura MacDonald and husband Donald of Alexandria, VA; and three great-grandchildren: Matthew, Emily, and Daniel.
A memorial service will be held in her church home of 65 years, Westminster Presbyterian, 1502 W 13th St., Wilmington, DE 19806 on Sat., March 23 at 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church; the Methodist Country House Benevolent Fund, 4830 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807; or Gilpin Hall, 1101 Gilpin Ave., Wilmington, DE 19806.
