Joan Smith Haddock, of Wilmington, DE., departed this life on September 6th 2013, at her residence in the Methodist Country House surrounded by all of her children and their spouses. She was 83 years old.
Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, Joan was the daughter of the late Benton Pilgrim Smith and Dorothy Fencil Smith. She moved with her parents to England when she was two years old and returned to the Philadelphia area with them two years later. She graduated from Lansdowne High School in 1946 and attended the Millersville campus of Penn State University
for one year, before leaving to marry and start a family with the late William A. Haddock Jr. of Wilmington, DE.
Possibly the most challenging job she held was as the mother of four; but she excelled at it, as in everything else she put her mind to; no mother was more beloved! Other jobs included working for Trinity Episcopal Parish, The Episcopal Diocese of Delaware, and as an Organizational Development Consultant, before going to work for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware from which she retired as Internal Auditor in 1994.
During her working years, Joan returned to school and in 1985 she received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Widener University. In 1988, she was awarded her Internal Auditor Certification and in 1994, at the age of 65, received her Master's of Science in Accounting, with honors (also from Widener University). An avid learner, Joan continued to take courses at the Academy of Lifelong Learning in Wilmington from 1995 thru 2006.
Joan was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Parish in Wilmington and served on the vestry. She served on the Christmas Shop committee for many years, including one year as Chairman. She also volunteered for a number of organizations including the Friendship House Ministries Clothing Bank of Delaware and the Friends School Mentoring program.
Joan is survived by her children: Margaret (Peggy) Haddock Bandarra and husband Paul of Wrentham MA, William D. Haddock II and wife April of Denton MD, John Benton Haddock and wife Linda of Elkton MD, and Judith Haddock Naughtin and husband Don of Dawsonville GA; eight grandchildren, Bradley Geiger, Megan Beckley, Micah Haddock, Timothy Haddock, Levi Haddock, Joshua Haddock, Rebekah Haddock and Chelsea Johnson; and four great grandchildren, Braden Haddock, Tristan Haddock, Tru Haddock and Nathanael Haddock. She is also survived by her two sisters, Marilyn S. Horne of West Chester PA and Ann S. Snyder of Pittsburgh PA. She was the long-time companion and friend of Maurice L. Ernsberger (deceased).
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 21st at 12:30 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1108 North Adams St., Wilmington DE 19801. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Memory of Joan S. Haddock can be made to the Woodlawn Branch Library, 2020 West 9th St., Wilmington, DE 19805 or Friendship House Ministries, PO Box 1517, Wilmington, DE 19899.
