John "Bill" Crowther
John "Bill" Crowther, age 89, of Glen Mills, PA, formerly of Claymont, DE, passed away on April 4, 2014 at Riddle Memorial Hospital.
Bill graduated from Newtown High School, PA in 1942 and entered the Navy in 1943. He served on a destroyer in WWII
and was discharged in 1946. He went on to graduate from Millersville University with a BS degree in 1948 and New York University
with a Masters degree in 1949.
Bill taught Industrial Arts and Math at Mt. Pleasant High School immediately after college. He spent the next 40 years teaching and mentoring students there. He was inducted into the Mt. Pleasant Hall of Fame in 2005. He coached cross country and track and field, with his teams winning a number of state championships.
Bill officiated at the Penn Relays for 35 years. He was a track and field official at the 1984 Summer Olympics. In 1995, he was inducted into the Delaware Track and Field Hall of Fame, and in 2008 received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mid-Atlantic USA Track and Field Association. Bill worked 3 NCAA Track and Field national championships and numerous IC4A Track and Field championships.
Bill officiated football at the high school and collegiate levels for over 50 years. He worked the 1981 Army/Navy game, and, at the end of his career, worked the clock at many University of Delaware games.
Bill was one of the founders of the New Castle County School Employees Credit Union, and was recently recognized for over 60 years of service. Bill served as President of the Delaware State Teachers Association, trustee of United Methodist Church of the Atonement in Claymont and President of the Claymont Chapter AARP.
Bill and his wife Betty lived in Claymont, DE for 60 years before retiring to Maris Grove in Glen Mills, PA. While there, Bill was active in the woodshop and veterans clubs and continued to pursue his lifelong passion for woodworking.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Betty Crowther; daughter, Carol Gaulding and husband, Cary of Centreville, VA; son, Glenn Crowther and wife, Tracy of Bear, DE. Bill has 4 grandsons and 4 great grandsons.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont; DE. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 10:00am at Gebhart Funeral Home. Interment in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, DE will follow the service.
