John Ingram Hughes
John Ingram Hughes died peacefully on Thursday June 20, 2013 at Cokesbury Village in Hockessin. He was 94. He and Catherine, his college sweetheart and devoted wife of almost 70 years, made their home in Wilmington for the past 60 years.
John Hughes was born in 1919 in Hudson, Wisconsin to John Moffat Hughes and Margaret Ingram in the Octagon House, built in 1855 by his great grandfather, John Shaw Moffat, and now a museum. He attended the University of Minnesota
, graduating in 1941 as a bachelor of Chemical Engineering.
He joined the DuPont Company at the Belle, West Virginia plant in July 1941. He spent 40 ½ years as a chemical engineer and R&D manager in process and product development. In 1964, he became Venture Manager and spent 15 years of managing and commercializing a new venture in unique heat exchangers of Teflon. He retired in 1981.
John maintained a lifelong interest in music. Early piano lessons gave way to the clarinet by age 10, and he was still playing at the end. He played principal clarinet in high school, University of Minnesota concert band, DuPont Concert Band and the First Sate Symphonic Band. During winters in Florida, he played in the Naples concert band for 20 years. He was called upon frequently to play solos and in ensembles at churches. He served on the Board of Directors of the Wilmington Music School for 21 years.
John was a 50+ year member of Silverside Church (Second Baptist) and served as deacon, trustee, and music committee member. He traveled extensively and developed a hobby of travel photography. He was a founding member of the Skating Club of Wilmington and enjoyed ice dancing for nearly 20 years. He and Catherine enjoyed ballroom dancing wherever they went.
John is survived by his wife Catherine Combacker Hughes of Hockessin; daughter Martha Hughes Londergan and her husband Dick of Wethersfield, CT; daughter Nancy Hughes Robb and her husband George of Concord, MA; 3 grandchildren Casey Hughes Londergan and his wife Anne Pitts Londergan of Haverford, PA, Bevan Patrick Londergan of Jacksonville Beach, FL and Kelly Ingram Robb of Chicago, IL; and 2 great grandchildren, William Hughes Londergan and Mae Cecile Londergan of Haverford, PA; and a niece Margaret Swanson Stern of Woodbury, MN.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am at Cokesbury Village, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin on Saturday July 13, 2013. Interment will be private.
