John Richard (Jack) Chrustowski

AGE: 72 • Newark

John Richard Chrustowski (Jack), 72, of Newark, DE., passed away on January 3, 2014. He was born on December 19, 1941 in Salem, New Jersey.

Jack was raised in Elsinboro Township and graduated from Salem High School in 1960. He was very athletic and won several championships in pole vaulting and track. After graduation, Jack served in the U.S. Army for 4 years from 1962 to 1966 and was stationed in Kentucky as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division. He completed 38 jumps, and attained the rank of Sergeant.

For 33 years, Jack worked as a Laboratory Technician with the DuPont Chamber Works. Upon retirement, he enjoyed ball room dancing. Jack played the accordion, and is a member of the Delaware Accordion Club. He enjoyed music, especially songs by Frank Sinatra. Jack sang in the chorus with the Songbirds at the Newark Senior Center that perform at various Nursing Homes in the Delaware area. He played chess and was a constant figure at the Newark Senior Center. Jack especially enjoyed the Thursday evening get together of Let's Dance. He was a regular church attender.

Jack is preceded in death by his father, Charles J. Chrustowski. He is survived by his 94-year old mother, Elizabeth (Kiger) Chrustowski of Elsinboro, NJ. Jack is cherished by his fiancé, Paula Jean Cobb of Newark, DE. They were in the process of planning their forthcoming wedding. He is survived by his sister, Betty Jean Eby and her husband, George, of Elsinboro, NJ; his two nieces, Kayt Eber and her husband, Rick, with their sons, Mason and Matthew, from Woodstown, NJ, and Karen Ingling and her husband, Phil, with their son, Cody, from Swedesboro, NJ.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 8th from 6 to 7:30 P.M. in the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808, where a brief prayer service will begin at 7:30 P.M. A committal service will be held on Thursday, January 9th at 11 A.M. in the chapel at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE, 19701.

As Jack was generous to donate part of his remains to Gift of Life to provide a legacy for those in need , the family would appreciate memorial contributions in lieu of flowers be made to Gift of Life, 401 North Third St., Philadelphia, PA 19123-4101 or to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Betty, Betty Jean, George and Rick: So sorry to hear of Jack's passing. We had some great times growing up in Elsinboro - games, pole vaulting, playing ball, playing with chemicals, etc.

I worked with Jack at the plant and I must say he always had us laughing. He was quite a character and a good and nice man. He will be missed but the memories of working with Jack will remain! R.I.P. Jack.
