Joseph "Jay" Brabson, P.E.
AGE: 65 • Wilmington
Joseph 'Jay' Brabson, aged 65, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on July 26, 2014, at Christiana Hospital, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on October 25, 1948, to Joseph and Anna May. He was a graduate of Brandywine High School (1966) then majored in Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware (1971), where he met his wife, Dorothy, and where he was a founding member of UD's Delta Upsilon chapter. Jay worked in industry for two decades, including NVF, Seton Industries, and Arlon, before obtaining advanced training and securing a position with DNREC's Air, then Accidental Release Prevention Program, where he worked as an environmental engineer until his death.
While at DNREC, Jay developed a common sense model of collaboration between regulators and industry. Last year he spoke at the national EPA conference, urging that accidental release prevention should be a partnership between corporations and regulators, not an adversarial relationship. During these years he advanced his skills and became certified as a professional engineer.Jay loved the outdoors, and enjoyed nature walks, birding, and trips to the beach. He enjoyed visiting various state and national parks. Jay believed in being physically active and especially loved tennis and golf.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Wessells), his daughter, Rebecca (Harris), his grandson, Rafael, his son, James (Tammy), and his brother, Don (Kia). Friends may visit with the family on Monday, August 4th, from 5-7 PM at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road Pike Creek.
