Kathryn Joannides Rayias
Kathryn Joannides Rayias of Newport, DE, fell asleep on Monday evening, August 26, 2013, in the loving presence of her son Peter.
She was 92 years old, was born in 1921 and raised in Wilmington, DE to Greek immigrant parents John Joseph (Plengas) Joannides of Ipirus, Greece and Anna Mansouri of Constantinople, Turkey. She was predeceased by her husband Charles Peter Rayias of 55 years of Mytilene, Greece. She graduated from Wilmington High School and The Pietro Deiro School of Music, Philadelphia, PA. She was a well-known accordionist and taught accordion and piano for many years throughout the Wilmington area.
She was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and of the Wilmington Chapter of the Greek Orthodox Philoptochos Society where she served as President and Secretary. Kathryn and her husband Charles made numerous trips to their homeland Greece, Constantinople (Agia Sophia Greek Orthodox Patriarchal Church) and Smyrna, Turkey, the Holy Land Jerusalem, Israel and the Vatican in Italy.
She is survived by her brother Joseph Joannides and his wife Alice, by her sister Zoe Zambetis and her husband Paul, by her son Peter Charles Rayias and his daughters Maria Ione Rayias, Melissa Candice Rayias and her husband Panayiotis Maraveyias and Nicole Melanie Rayias, all residing in Greece, and by her son John Charles Rayias and his wife Linda and their children Stacey Rayias, Alexa Rayias, Stephanie Rayias and Henry Galvin and his wife Heather. She is also survived by four great grandchildren Joy, Katerina, Nataly, and Alexander. Kathryn lives in our hearts.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday August 31, 2013 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N. Broom, Wilmington. Interment will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery.
