Laurance McPheeters

Laurance McPheeters, age 87, died peacefully on February 17, 2013 at Seasons Hospice at Christiana Care Hospital in Newark, DE.

Larry was born on March 12, 1925 in Chattanooga, TN, the only child of James Douglas Laurance and Margaret Caroline Read McPheeters.

Larry was an honor graduate of the Baylor School in Chattanooga. He earned his Eagle Scout badge as a member of the scout troop at First Presbyterian Church. After high school, Larry enlisted in the Army and served his country in the European Theater earning the Combat Infantry Medal, the Purple Heart, and a Bronze Star for heroic achievement in action with the 95th Division.

Upon his honorable discharge from the army at the end of World War II, Larry graduated with an AB from Amherst College and an MS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

Hired by the DuPont Company in 1951, he and his new bride, Polly, moved to Wilmington where they lived, worked, and raised their family. After his retirement from DuPont, Larry had a second career as a 20-year master electrician volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County.

Larry was a member and Elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he worshiped and served faithfully.

He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 63 years, Pauline Chenery Howes McPheeters, as well as their three sons; Jon and his wife Susan (Wilmington), Paul and his wife Nancy (Boston, MA), and Douglas and his wife Jean (Wilmington); and seven grandchildren; Ian, Andrew, Sarah, Rebekah, Jana, Molly, and Devyn. Larry was predeceased by his parents and by his first son, Laurance Drake, who died in infancy.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for the loving care that Larry received at Foulk Manor North, the Christiana Care Hospital, and finally at Seasons Hospice.

The family will greet friends on Thursday, February 21, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 22, 2013 at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1502 West 13th Street Wilmington, DE 19806 or to Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County, 1920 Hutton Street Wilmington, DE 19802.
