Leona E. Galford
AGE: 92 • Hockessin
Leona Ellen Galford, aged 92, departed this life on December 22, 2013 at Cokesbury Village, Hockessin, where she lived for almost four years. She was born in Huntington, West Virginia, the daughter of Leona B. and George D. Miller. She grew up in the historic settlements of Guyandotte and Le Sage in West Virginia on the Ohio River. During her high school and early adult years, she developed a strong bond of friendship with eight girls - some with husbands away in World War II - all of whom kept in close contact with each other until their deaths. (One, Jenny Shepherd, still survives in Albuquerque, NM.) In later years, they fondly referred to themselves as "The Girls".
Leona attended Marshall University in Huntingdon, WV, where she was awarded a Master's Degree in Education. After marriage to Robert (Bob) R. Galford, they lived in Le Sage, WV, until they moved to Florida. After Bob completed graduate study at Florida State University in 1966, they moved to Delaware for Bob to accept employment at the DuPont Jackson Laboratory.
After a visit to "Day in Old New Castle", Leona decided that was where she wanted to live. In 1968, they bought a house built c.1800 at 126 Harmony Street and lived there until 2010, when they moved to Cokesbury Village. In New Castle, Leona was active in the Arasapha Garden Club, the New Castle Historical Society, and Immanuel on the Green Episcopal Church.
Leona is survived by her husband of 58 years, Robert; brother, William R. Miller and wife, Ellen of Norfolk, VA; brother-in-law, Ira D. Galford and wife, Audra of Oak Hill, WV; niece, Becky Miller of Norfolk, VA; nephew, James D. Miller and wife, Celia of Richmond, VA; grand-niece, Gray Miller of Richmond, VA; godchild, Marianne Stackpole of Heathsville, VA; and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held at Cokesbury Village on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. A burial service at Immanuel on the Green Church in New Castle will be announced at a later date.
