Madeline R. Dunbar

Madeline R. Dunbar, age 100, formerly a resident of Woodcrest, Wilmington, DE, passed away on May 16, 2014 after being lovingly cared for by David and Elizabeth Dunbar of Chadds Ford, PA for the past four years. Madeline was the oldest daughter of nine children of the late Earle Robinson and Bertha (Fogarty) Robinson of Centreville, MD. After graduating from high school in 1930, Madeline came to Wilmington, DE to attend Goldey College Business School, graduating in 1932. While at Goldey she was initiated into the Alpha Iota National Business Sorority.
During her lifetime Madeline was an active member of St. Matthews Church, on Newport Pike. She served on the church council, the altar committee, and as Prefect of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality. Madeline also served as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and was cookie chairman for the Girl Scouts. She was a past member of the DuPont Country Club where she took golf lessons and enjoyed playing the game. Madeline was a good cook and was known by family and friends for her cinnamon buns, as well as her apple and banana cream pies. She was an avid collector of penguins and paperweights, and held a high appreciation for the colors pink, lavender and soft blue. She was a snappy dresser and was quick-witted up until her final days.
During her lifetime, Madeline worked for Paul J. Nowland, Inc., the Equitable Trust Company, John J. Pearce & Co. and Mr. David Craven. Her last job was as administrative assistant to Mrs. Wilhalmina Laird Craven for twenty-six years, retiring on June 1, 1990 at age 77.
In addition to her parents, Madeline was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence H. Dunbar, Sr. in 1973 after thirty-three years of marriage, her oldest son Lawrence H. Dunbar, Jr. in 2008, her four sisters, Margaret, Mildred, Blanche, Mary Marie, and her four brothers Melvin, Paul, George, and Thomas.
Beloved by her family and friends, she is survived by three children: Robert F. Dunbar (Yvette), Teresa M. Dunbar (Maureen Keenan), David E. Dunbar (Elizabeth), grandchildren Karen Dunbar (Mike Minelli), Robert L. Dunbar (Lee), Jacqueline Dunbar (Matt Maier), and her great grandson Fredo Dunbar.
