Marilyn Alderman Obituary

Marilyn Miller Alderman

Marilyn Miller Alderman, age 73, died peacefully at her home in Hockessin, DE, on Sunday, May 5, 2013, in the presence of her husband George E. Alderman, daughter Lauren Alderman, granddaughter Jade, son Paul J. Alderman, and cousin Ralph T. Schwab of Albuquerque, NM. Caregivers also included brother John D. Miller, daughter-in-law Heather O. Alderman, granddaughter Hanna, and her best friend Audrey Watson of Delmar, NY.

Marilyn was born November 13, 1939 in Erie, PA, daughter of Jane H. Delo Miller and George H. Miller. She attended Penn Elementary and East High schools, graduating with honors in 1957. She then entered Oberlin College in Ohio, graduating again with honors in chemistry and art in 1961. She began working with Hercules, Inc. in Delaware in 1961 and when the Triumph TR3 she was driving had a problem her friends told her to take it to George Alderman, who was just beginning his business of repairing sports cars. On November 24, 1962, Marilyn married George in Erie, PA. Marilyn continued working at Hercules until 1966 when Lauren was born and George needed help building his recently acquired Datsun dealership; they also sold Lotus and Rover.

Until the sale of their Nissan franchise in 1994, Marilyn was a major contributor to the success of the business, running the accounting department, as well as working side by side with George, while raising two wonderful children, and going to the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) and International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) races with George. She even got her own SCCA Regional racing license and ran a few races and hill climb events before Lauren was born.

In June 1984, Marilyn became interested in flying, in order to get back and forth from the various race tracks more quickly. She bought a Piper Cherokee with her flight instructor and by December 1984 had her private pilot certificate. She obtained her instrument rating in July 1985 and her commercial certificate in June 1986. Marilyn's next challenge was to fly a twin engine plane, so she bought a Seneca III and by September 1987 she earned her multi-engine rating. She got the Part 135 rating in September 1990 and her Airline Transport certificate in July 1993. In November 1997 she began training at Flight Safety International and flew part-time as copilot with the Westwind and Astra Corporate Jet Group until November 2005, at which time she had logged more than 4000 hours of flight time. She really loved to fly and would gladly take friends and family flying, and employees on business trips, to meetings, or to the races.

Marilyn's achievements, honors, and affiliations are widely known and include the following: charter member Wilmington Manor Rotary Club; two terms Rotary District Treasurer; active member International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians; member Brandywine Motorsport Club; Treasurer, Delaware Chapter of The Ninety-Nines, Inc. (International Organization of Women Pilots) and Governor of its Mid-Atlantic Section; founding director Delaware Aviation Support, Inc. (DASI); founding trustee and treasurer of the Delaware Aviation Hall of Fame; and twice a successful competitor in 1991 and 1993 with Caroline Lunger in the Air Race Classic (Trans-Continental Air Race for Women Pilots). The airplane, a TB20 (Trinidad) affectionately called "Trini" was Marilyn's favorite, owned jointly first with Brett Lunger, then later with John Poore. In 2006, Marilyn was the first member of the board to be inducted into the Delaware Aviation Hall of Fame.

A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2313 Concord Pike (Fairfax), Wilmington, DE, on Saturday, May 25th, at 11 am, where visitation will begin at 9:30 am. A reception will follow the service in the church auditorium.

Donations in lieu of flowers are encouraged for Cancer Support Community Delaware, 4810 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807; or to The Ninety-Nines Endowment Fund, Virginia Harmer, Treasurer, 8627 Banyan Street, Alta Loma, CA 91701; or to the Delaware Chapter of The Ninety-Nines Marilyn Alderman Memorial Scholarship, c/o Ellen Nobles-Harris, 2424 Dorval Road, Wilmington, DE 19810-3529.

Not sure what to say?

This post brought back some lovely memories of the brief time I was able to get to know Marilyn. We met at the Cancer Support Community and I loved listening to her stories about all her travels, flying a plane, her wonderful sense of humor and enjoying the twizzlers every Monday. I joined CSCDE in June of 2010 and am still attending as I'm going through my third round of cancer but I will always remember Marilyn fondly and I know she's missed very much. Much love to all the Alderman family!

Candy and Pete (in the blanket) arrive at her parents' house in early-1968

George and Family: Candy and I were happy to attend Marilyn's Memorial Service on Saturday and we were delighted to meet your family. Your son Paul and our son Pete were classmates at Alexis I. DuPont High School, which we only learned after we told Pete about the service. Presumably, we also lived near each other as our sons attended the same school, but we had lost touch ... until now.

We were flattered that you remembered me, my mother and the Lotus Elan Coupe. I went searching for a picture and found one from early-1968, which I will attempt to attach here, but no guarantees it will work. Look for us on facebook where I published the same picture.

Thanks for such a heartfelt memorial service for Marilyn, whom we knew only for those few years in the late-1960's but whom we will never forget.

George, I was saddened to learn of Marilyn's passing. I have fond memories of bridge games, late nights in the shop and going to many races with you and Marilyn.

What a long and productive life Mrs. Alderman lived. Though I did not have the privilege of knowing her I was moved by her life's accomplishments. Having left such a legacy brings to mind a scripture that reads, "A name is better than good oil, and the day of death than the day of one being born.(Ecc. 7:1) I am so sorry to hear of your loss.

Dear George, Paul,Laura, Heather and family,

Please accept my deepest condolences for Marilyn's passing. I remember her being the `Boss Lady,' while answering phones in the showroom in '79. She was very patient with me and it was a pleasure to see her, and you, George, at the reunion several years back.
And, also, to her brother, John, whom I know as Mr. Miller, who was my 9th grade social studies teacher at McKean High..I'm so sorry for your loss.

God will wipe away all tears...He promised us that...

My most deepest sympathies to George and the rest of Marilyn's family. I never really got the chance to know Marilyn very personally, but she was always a friendly and very engaging woman when I had the chance to meet her at the functions of the Brandywine Motorsport Club. I'm very sorry that I cannot be there to pay my respects personally.

Please accept my condolences.

God has promised to us he will swallow up death forever.

Sincerely,

It's been a long, long time since I saw Marilyn. I knew her from my early days at Hercules when we were all at the Research Center- and young. We used to have great times together. Sending my condolences to the family.

What fun, fond memories I have of flying with Marilyn. She had a wonderful, dry sense of humor and I learned a lot from her. I will miss her but know she is spreading her wings into eternity. To George, Laura, Paul & Family: my heart goes out to you.

Even though I only knew Marilyn for a short time through the Cancer Support Community I found her to be inspiring, intelligent, thoughtful and overall a wonderful lady. I will miss her very much at our Monday morning meetings. May there be endless Twizzlers in heaven, Marilyn. Love, Judy

My Prayers to all the family. Marilyn truly was an inspiration especially to women. When I applied for a sales job she asked me what I thought of women race car drivers and I said that they would be cool, so she hired me. Thank you Marilyn and George, you are incredible people. Marilyn you made a huge mark on the world and will never be forgotten.

Marilyn has now gained her "wings" to fly forever beyond the clouds and storms of life on this earth. I have many fond memories of flying with her in each of the four airplanes she owned over the years. My prayers are with her family as they grieve for her, knowing she has passed through the "bright spot" in the cloud of life.
