Mark Robert Harrison

Mark Robert Harrison

AGE: 65 • Newark

Mark Robert Harrison, beloved son, brother and friend, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2014 surrounded by the books and music he loved. Known for his ready smile and quick wit, Mark was a lifelong scholar, an insatiable reader and a student of history and politics. An avid chess player, concert-goer and devotee of blues music, Mark lived his life fully and with no regrets. He particularly enjoyed his many hours spent over the years at the University of Delaware's Morris Library.

He leaves his father, Jack Harrison, and sister Lynn Harrison of Hockessin, DE; his sister Nancy Harrison Geoghegan, brother-in-law Brian Geoghegan, nephews Nicolae and Benjamin Geoghegan of Lincoln University, PA; his sister Susan Harrison Werner, brother-in-law Harry W. Werner and nephew Harry Phillip and wife Olga Naidenko of North Granby, CT; his niece Robin W. Baran, her husband Kevin Baran and their children Anna, Sam and Caroline Baran of Avon, CT; cousin JoAnn Meloni of Wilmington DE, cousin George Harrison and his children Samuel and Ella Harrison of Midlothian, VA; and many friends including his loyal chess partner Clint Rowland. He was predeceased by his mother, Doris Bennett Harrison.

Mark's passion for history is best expressed in these words of playwright Alan Bennett:

"The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours".

Mark will be sorely missed by all of us who loved him. Per Mark's wishes, no services are planned. Memorial contributions in Mark's name may be made to the University of Delaware's Morris Library via the Development and Alumni Relations, Gifts Receiving & Processing Office, 83 E. Main St., 3rd Floor, Newark, DE 19716 or go to noting "Morris Library" and Mark's name. Donations may also be made in Mark's name to the ALS Association
