Patricia B. Beatson
AGE: 80 • Wilmington
Patricia B. Beatson, age 80, died peacefully on February 18, 2014, surrounded by her adoring family. She will be eternally cherished and loved forever.
Pat was born on March 13, 1933 and grew up in Wilmington's Ninth Ward, graduating from Christ Our King School and St. Elizabeth High School. She enjoyed playing basketball and loved sports of all kinds. She was an ardent fan of Notre Dame Football, Roger "The Dodger" Staubach, Larry Bird, The Phillies, the Boston Celtics (she owned stock) and all St. Elizabeth and Salesianum School teams. She could talk sports and stats on a dime with the best of them. Pat loved to sing and, most days, she could be heard singing, whistling or humming her favorite tunes around the house.
Pat and James H. "Jim" Beatson married in 1953, moved to Claymont, DE and started a family. Together, Pat and Jim raised seven children at 601 Harvey Road, a home known for its open-door policy. Pat was a beloved wife, mom and homemaker. She served as second mom to anyone in need.
Pat worked for many years at Diamond State Telephone (Bell Atlantic) - first as a switchboard operator. She was promoted to Account Executive - with DuPont as one of her main clients. Her husband and children were very proud of her professional achievements, and her career was built on sheer work ethic, "people smarts" and an infectiously warm personality. To know Pat was to immediately like her - and to eventually love her.
Pat is survived by her husband of more than 60 years, Jim; her children: Mary Ellen Schofield (Andrew) of Bear, DE; James H. Beatson, Jr., of Wilmington, DE; Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Brady (Michael) of Hockessin, DE; Patricia "Trisha" Casula (Paul) of Hockessin, DE; Joanne M. Cary (Phillip) of Bristol, NY; Robert Beatson (Joan) of Wilmington, DE; and Jennifer Beatson of Wilmington, DE. Pat was blessed with 14 grandchildren: Alexandra, Amanda, Ben, Bridgette, Christopher, Hagan, Jack, James, Jill, Maggie, Michael, Nathan, Sam and Stephen; as well as 3 great-grandchildren: Audrey, Liam and Olivia; and a great-granddaughter due in April. Pat is also survived by her sister, Eleanor (Sister Marie Consolata Billingsley) of the Benedictine Sisters at St. Gertrude Monastery, Ridgely, MD; and brother, Michael Billingsley of Wilmington, DE.
She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Billingsley; brother, Joseph Billingsley; and sisters, Clementine "Cemmie" Lewis and Mary Mical.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, where family and friends are invited to visit beginning at 10:00am. Burial will be held privately with Pat's family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Benedictine School for Exceptional Children, 14299 Benedictine Lane, Ridgely, MD 21660.
