Philip R. McGinnis, 91, of Newark, DE died Friday, May 9, 2014. He was born October 5, 1922 in Kansas City, MO to the late Donald William McGinnis and Rosamond Crosby McGinnis. He grew up in Kansas City, MO and Cranford, NJ.
Phil played ice hockey at Cornell University and graduated from Cornell with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1944. He then served in the US Navy
teaching diesel engineering to officer candidates at Cornell and then as a CPO at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. From 1946-1948 he worked for American LaFrance Fire Engine Company and was then employed by the Atomic Energy Commission. He studied engineering and physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before joining the duPont Company in 1951. His employment at duPont spanned 35 years and included work in Chicago, IL, Aiken, SC, Wilmington, DE, Baltimore, MD and Deepwater, NJ. After retirement from duPont he put his skills to work for Habitat for Humanity. He had a hand in building or rehabilitating numerous Habitat for Humanity Homes in New Castle County. He was also an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newark.
In 1949, Phil married Doris Joye Gordon McGinnis. They enjoyed 60 years together and raised five children: Donna Higgins (Jim) of Chesapeake City, MD, Bryn Burke (John) of Naples, FL, Peter McGinnis (Mary Margaret "Boodie") of Cortland, NY, Michael McGinnis (Meredith) of Greenville, SC, and Kim Russell of Lakewood, OH.
He is survived by 14 grandchildren: Amy Higgins Neill (Bill), Sara Higgins Pereira (Darryl), Ken Higgins (Kristen), Scott Higgins, Brian Burke (Julie), Mairin Burke Smith (Justin), Sean Burke (Catherine), Evelyn Burke, Kathryn McGinnis Wilson (Matt), Peter Stewart McGinnis, Madeline Russell, Sam Russell, Anna Russell, and Charlie Russell, and twelve great-grandchildren: Zoe, Heidi, Sean and Daisy Burke; Emma and Carter Neill; Imogen Pereira; Adelaide and Grant Smith; Lily and Brian Calaeb Burke; and Dylan Wilson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Joye McGinnis, his parents, Donald W. McGinnis and Rosamond Crosby McGinnis, his sister, Dorothy Jane McGinnis, a son, Michael Gordon McGinnis, and a granddaughter, Margaret Ruth McGinnis.
Phil enjoyed being outdoors - skiing and skating in the winter, sailing, swimming, and biking in the summer, and walking all year round. He especially enjoyed the annual McGinnis Beach Week in Rehoboth Beach, DE where he was surrounded by all of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a kind, gentle and caring man who enjoyed life. His wit and humor were enjoyed by all.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 22nd, 2 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Newark, 292 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Habit for Humanity of New Castle County, 1920 Hutton Street, Wilmington, DE 19802, www.habitatncc.org
