Phyllis B. Wingate

A native Delawarean, Phyllis B. Wingate, at age 79, died at home on March 14, 2013, after an extended illness. She was born on December 19, 1933 in Wilmington, Delaware, the only child of Carlton and Grace Wingate.

She graduated from Wilmington High School in 1951, Goldey-Beacom College in 1953 and began her 40 years of service with E.I. duPont deNemours & Company in the steno pool and retired as a business analyst in the Imaging Department.

Phyllis served on the Elsmere Council from 1991 through 1999. She was an avid reader, enjoyed classes in sculpture and crafting jewelry at the Delaware Art Center over the years and, as her friends will attest to, she was always ready and well informed for discussions at length on the current social/political issues and all other topics of interest to her.

She was predeceased by her parents, Carlton R. Wingate in 1969 and Grace Balfour Wingate in 1985. She is survived by cousins in Wilmington and Texas, and many good friends. Phyllis was especially thankful for her wonderful caregivers, Sue Koterski, Diane Rimi and Linda Walden, who she considered friends and for whom she developed a great affection.

Services will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, March 27, at the McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway at Duncan Rd., Wilmington, Delaware. Visitation will be from 12:30-1 pm. Burial will follow in Lower Brandywine Cemetery, Kennett Pike, Greenville, Delaware.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Phyllis may be made to the Elsmere Library, 30 Spruce Avenue, Elsmere, DE 19805.
