Robert Downie Forbes "Scotty"

September 27, 1924 -

June 24, 2013

Passed away at home at the age of 88, surrounded by his family. He was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland to Mary Downie and Robert Forbes.

At age 18, he entered the Royal Air Force and began his lifelong beloved career in aviation. During WWII, he served as a Flight Engineer, and before the war ended he had flown many missions for the air forces in India and later the Berlin airlift.

After the war, he was hired by BOAC (British Airways) and chosen to be a member of the elite first flight crew on BOAC's Comet, the first passenger jet aircraft to fly the friendly skies. While flying the line with BOAC, and on a layover in Bermuda, he met his beautiful wife Jane Van Syckel, who at the time was enjoying a successful modeling career in New York City. He lit her cigarette on the St. George's Hotel veranda, the two fell in love and the rest is history.

Jane is what brought Scotty to the USA where he would become a citizen and continue his career in aviation, flying as Chief Engineer for Capitol Airways for 25 years. In addition to flying, Scotty taught ground school for many years always eager to share his passion and respect for aviation. Circumventing the globe countless times, according to his log book which included time on B24J Liberator, Blenheim, Dakota III,IV,Sentinel LS, Oxford I, Argus II, Constellation, Comet, DC-8, DC-10, his total hours flown exceeded 40,000.

In addition to his loving wife of almost 60 years Jane, he is survived by his daughter Sharon and her husband Bill Lyons (Hockessin, DE) and daughter Laura and her partner Ashley Dinan (New York City, NY). The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Regal Heights, VITAS Hospice, nurse Margaret, aide Kathy and his caregivers Marie Giselle Amougou and Kelly Saah from Griswold. We cannot thank you enough for your kindness, patience and compassion - "pals for life".
