Robert M. (Bob) Smart

Robert M. Smart, 61, died unexpectedly Dec. 3, 2012 in Chittenden, Vermont.

He was born in Helena, MT, Aug. 25, 1951, son of Rex C. and Elsie M. (Johnson) Smart. Bob graduated from Helena High School with the amazing class of 1969. He went on to graduate from Montana State University in Bozeman with a degree in Chemical Engineering.

In 1971, he married his high school sweetheart, Susan Sparing, and the adventure began. After graduation from MSU, Bob started his 39 year career with DuPont. The first assignment in New Johnsonville, Tennessee brought with it the addition to their family of a son, Michael. At the next stop in Antioch, CA they added to the family with a daughter, Sherryl. After that there were two more assignments in Tennessee, three assignments in Tampico, Mexico, one assignment in Taipei, Taiwan and two assignments in Wilmington, DE. During his years with DuPont, Bob became known for his TiO2 manufacturing expertise and his passion for safety. Bob retired from DuPont on August 31, 2012.

No matter where he lived, Bob was constantly giving back to his community. He was a leader with United Way, a Boy Scout leader, involved in supporting the Salvation Army Home for children in Tampico and a dearly beloved "Uncle" to many foster children in Taiwan.

Bob had many passions in his life, but might possibly be known best for his love of cooking on his Big Green Eggs, telling jokes and bass fishing. After retirement he and Susan pursued their dream of owning a Bed & Breakfast Inn and purchased the Fox Creek Inn located in Chittenden, Vermont.

Surviving are his wife, Susan of Chittenden; son, Michael Smart and wife, Blair of Nashville, TN; daughter, Sherryl Sanders and husband, Noah and their son, Tagen of Nashville, TN; 4 sisters, Marilyn Emmons of Olive, MT, Sandra Kimbrough, Mikel Reuter and Judy Emerson all of Spokane, Wash; his extended family, Kathryn Wickham and husband, Barnaby and their children, Lucy and Elliot of Baltimore, MD and multiple foster children in Australia and Holland.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family in Delaware.

Memorial donations can be made as a Tribute Gift in Bob's name to Winterthur, 5105 Kennett Pike, Winterthur, DE 19735; or The United Way. The family requests no flowers, please.
