Russell F. Dennis
Russell Francis Dennis, age 70, of Newark, Delaware, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family and friends on Tuesday, February 12, 2013.
The youngest of three children, "Denny" was born in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, the son of Russell S. Dennis and Francis Dennis. A 1960 Brandywine High School graduate, he attended the University of Delaware. Here, he received his bachelor and master's degrees in American Studies and a master's degree in School Counseling.
Following college, Russ began his life-long career in education. After teaching in Dover, he worked as a guidance counselor in the Red Clay and Christina School Districts for 30 years. After retiring, he worked in Christina School District's Grove Adult Education Program and in Delaware's correctional system to provide GED opportunities to detainees.
Russ had many hobbies and interests. A car enthusiast, he was happiest working under a vehicle on a summer day. He also was very fond of the outdoors, enjoyed walking and was an avid gardener. Russ loved travelling with his wife and his friends. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren most of all.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Virginia Gordon Dennis of Newark. Also surviving are sons, Christopher D. Dennis and his wife, Helen of Hockessin, Andrew G. Dennis and his wife, Laura of Newark and a daughter, Karen E. Dennis of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Agnes Dennis and his brother, David Dennis (Susan), both of Wilmington. His grandchildren, Kyle, Trevor, Kayleigh and Sarah will also miss him immeasurably.
Calling hours will be held at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, Wilmington on Friday, February 15 from 4:00 - 7:00PM. A memorial service will be held at Saint James Episcopal Church, 2106 St. James Church Road, Mill Creek, Wilmington on Saturday, February 16 at 10:00AM.
