Sylvia B. Walther, age 86, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 2, 2014, at the Millcroft Nursing Home, where she had been a resident.
Born and raised on the family farm in Bear, DE on October 24, 1927, Sylvia was a daughter of the late William H. Walther and Dora Thorp Walther. Her love of farming and agriculture was instilled at a young age, and she operated the vegetable stand on Walther Road for over 30 years.
Sylvia was a pillar in the 4-H community for the past 65 years and was a former leader of the Bear 4-H club. She was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame and honored for the many lives she touched while volunteering her time and talents to the children she served. Sylvia was a longtime member of the 4-H Links, the Claymore Senior Center in Wilmington, and the Bear Ladies Club. She will be remembered for her independent spirit, impeccable work ethic, and gentle heart.
In addition to her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by her sisters, Caroline Neal and May Proud. She is survived by her brother, William F. Walther of Bear, DE; sisters, Dora Edwards of Newark, DE, Wilma Gott of Newark, DE, Frances Rogers of Houston, TX, Ruth Scott of Newark, DE; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, February 7, 2014, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where friends may call from 10 am until 12 Noon. Interment in Silverbrook Cemetery, Wilmington, DE, will be held privately and at the convenience of the family.
