Dr. William W Prichard died on March 30th, 2013, with his immediate family by his side. He was ninety-nine years old. Bill was born in Thief River Falls, MN, in 1914. He was the oldest of five children. After graduating high school at the age of sixteen, he took a year off to take post-graduate courses in typing, French, and shorthand, before working his way through the University of Minnesota
as a short-order cook. He met his future wife Kathryn while at the University and accepted a job as a research chemist at DuPont's Cental Research Experimental Station in Wilmington, DE, after graduating with a Ph.D in Organic Chemistry in 1939.
In 1954, Bill and Kathy joined with fifteen of Bill's colleagues and friends to build the community of Horseshoe Hill, dividing the land of an old farm in Hockessin, DE into equal shares. Bill designed and drew the blueprints for their new home, where the couple lived until 2003.
Bill loved his work at the Experimental Station, choosing to remain in the lab despite offers of promotion. He earned multiple patents throughout his career. Bill's penchant for invention was evident at home as well. When his wife, Kathy, was diagnosed with MS, he devised inventions to accommodate her growing needs. Bill retired in 1979 to take full nursing care of his wife. He continued to play tennis until he was 87 years old, and enjoyed fishing, chess and furniture-making.
Bill is survived by his daughter Anita, and her husband Robert Balderston, of Hockessin, DE, and two granddaughters, Kristin Kwasniewski of Providence, RI, and Lisa Prichard of Edmonton, Canada.
His wife, Kathy and their son, William Prichard, predeceased him.
A memorial service will be held at the Silverside Church, 2800 Silverside Rd, Wilmington, DE, on Sunday, April 21st at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be donated in Bill's name to Friendship House, Inc., P.O. Box 1517, Wilmington, DE 19899 (tel: 302-652-8278).
