Mary A. Colbourn

Mary Boddorff

Colbourn

Mary Boddorff Colbourn, age 65, of Centreville, DE, passed away after a long illness on Wednesday, January 30.

Mary was born in Hazelton, PA to Olga and Deane Boddorff. At age four her family relocated to Wilmington where her father was employed as an engineer with Hercules, Inc. She met her future husband while attending Mount Pleasant High School, from which she graduated in 1965. In 1969 she graduated from the University of Delaware with a BA in English. She worked as a buyer for John Wanamaker in Philadelphia, supporting her husband through his medical school years. Following those training years, with two children in tow, she returned for good to Wilmington.

Mary was very involved in her children's school years at Tower Hill. She served in many capacities, including president of the Home and School Association. At this same time she became increasingly active in community service. She was a long-time volunteer for the Delaware Chapter of the American Heart Association, serving both as President and Chairman of the Board. In 2007 she and her husband were co-recipients of the James H Gilliam, Jr. Memorial Award, presented by the American Heart Association in recognition of "lifelong achievements and commitment to the fight against heart disease."

Mary was an enthusiastic member of AAUW (American Association of University Women), enjoying years of membership in craft and book groups. She served as President of the Delaware Chapter, and Chairman of the Scholarship Committee. She served as a trustee to the chapter and for 17 years was editor of the monthly newsletter.

Her service to Westminster Presbyterian Church gave her the greatest satisfaction. She was a member since early childhood, was married there, and both her children and cherished grandson were baptized there. She served on many committees, as a deacon and an elder, Chairman of the Membership Committee, and Chairman of the Stewardship Campaign. She served as co-chair of Westminster's 125th Year Celebration, and for 15 years served as co-chair of the Memorial Tea Committee. In 2011, she was honored as Westminster's Woman of the Year.

Mary faced her last two difficult years with grace and courage. She will live forever in the hearts of all those who knew her.

Mary is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dr. Arthur Colbourn, her daughter Deborah and grandson Jack, and son David; sister Betsy and husband Kenneth Carmine; nephew Andrew (Lindsay) Carmine and niece Cindy Carmine. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday, February 3, from 2 to 4 PM at the Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 4, at 3 PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1502 West 13th Street, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be considered in Mary's name to: Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1502 West 13th Street, Wilmington, DE, 19806; the AAUW Scholarship Fund, 1800 Fairfax Boulevard, Wilmington, DE, 19803; or the Helen Graham Cancer Center at CCHS, 4701 Ogletown-Stanton Road, Newark, DE, 19713.
