Calliope G. Varlan

Calliope G. Varlan, 87, born in Chester, PA, on September 24, 1925, passed away October 8, 2012.

She was the daughter of George Nicholas and Fily Chorgas Varlan of Greece, who owned and operated the Chester Candy Kitchen. Callie was a graduate of Chester High School and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She was a professional interior designer; a member of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) who was very proud of her designs for the Methodist Country House and other businesses as well as her many private clients. She was the interior designer at Miller Brothers Furniture for over 50 years.

Callie was active for many years in the Daughters of Penelope; she was a founding member of the local chapter and served as District Governor of Pennsylvania. She always enjoyed spending time with family and friends and loved playing games, reading and travelling.

Her parents and brothers Nicholas, Peter, and John, and sister Marian predeceased Callie. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Varlan, her sister-in-law Dorothy Varlan Stryke (William), nieces and care givers Fily Wolczek (Marian) and Ann Schoen (Jack), great-nephews Tyler Schoen (Michelle), Brett Schoen, Ryan Schoen, and Marian Wolczek Jr. (Maria), great-great-nieces, cousins, and her beloved friends, sisters of her heart, Mary and Helen Beldecos.

Visitation: Friday, October 12, at 9 am at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 30 E Forge Rd, Media, PA, 19063. Service to follow at 10 am. Interment: Chester Rural Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church or to Crozer-Keystone Hospice, 5030 State Road, Suite 3001, Drexel Hill. PA 19026.
