George Estock Obituary

Former Professional Baseball Player
George John Estock Sr., 86, formerly of Claymont, DE, passed away at home on Sunday, November 7, 2010. He was born in Stirling, NJ to the late John and Anna Estock and was a 1942 graduate of Harding High School.
George was a professional baseball player for 14 years and continued to stay involved in the sport he loved through umpiring and coaching. George pitched in the major leagues in 1951 for the Boston Braves with notable teammates Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain. He was a member of the original Wilmington Blue Rocks in 1944 and 1945 and played for several other minor league teams throughout his career. George's 22 wins in 1945 with the Blue Rocks is still a club record and an interstate league record. In 1988, he was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame.
After 28 years of service, George retired from the DuPont Company as a supervisor at the Edgemoor location. Family and friends were extremely important to George. He enjoyed spending time at the Jersey shore fishing, crabbing and playing quoits. He also enjoyed horse racing, gardening and watching all sports activities. George enjoyed coaching baseball players from Little League to High School. He was respected and looked up to as a mentor.
In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his brother, John and his sister, Ann Price. He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 62 years, Janet Mae; his sister Catherine Angermann; daughter Lisa Ruzowicz and her husband Tony of Garnet Valley, PA; 3 sons, George and his wife Bernice of Tampa, FL, David and his wife Lois of Hockessin, DE, and Jeffrey and his wife June of Wilmington, DE; 9 grandchildren, Sharon Ray, George Ryan, Kaitlin, Dustin, Tyler, Austin, Jason, Joshua and Jordan; and 3 great-grandchildren, Nathan, Olivia and Emily.
A viewing will be held from 6-8 pm, Thursday, November 11 at the McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville (Route 202, just south of Silverside Rd.), with additional, overflow parking available in the rear lot of the Brandywine Y.M.C.A. on Mt. Lebanon Rd. Words of remembrance will be shared at 9:45 am, Friday, November 12, followed at 10 am by the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Cornelius Catholic Church, 106 Ridge Rd., Chadds Ford, PA. Interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring the memory of George Estock by sending a contribution to St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 13075 US Highway 1, Sebastian, FL 32958.

Janet and all your family, we just heard the news about George and our hearts are aching. He was such a special man and you were so lucky to have him as your friend and husband. We will miss him but know he is right there in all our hearts. When we think of you and him you both always warm our hearts. He was a special person and will always be with us and we are better people for having him in our lives if only for a short time. Bless you and all those that loved this kind, loving man. He was the best neighbor in Sebastian and made each of us better for just knowing him. Sincerely,

Janet
So very sorry to hear from Catherine the passing of George. I so enjoyed seeing him the past few times I was at my nephew's house in Sebastian. My mother, Anna Estock Dzugan, talked my times of him and that entire side of the family. My thoughts are with you. JoAnn Dzugan, Stratford, CT

George,
By sheer accident did my sister Barbara, and myself see the obituary of your father. Barbara Bailey (Warren)and Phyllis Bailey lived next door to you in Claymont. I remember you and your family, but after graduating and getting married, Barbara and I moved to Florida. Barbara lives in Clearwater, and I in Seminole, and was surprised to read that you also moved to Florida. We would just like to pass along our condolences to your mother and your family. Our mother Betty Bailey passed last November also and is missed also.

I have so many great memories spending time with Mr. and Mrs. Estock at their Claymont home and in Florida. I will never forget the great times spent playing cards, sitting by the fire and laughing over Lisa and my trip west and my first fishing trip in Florida. My heart goes out to the Estock family. He will be missed by all that knew him and there is no one like him. Kitty Figliola

I played Little League in Claymont with George's son. Years later I coached on the same field my father coach us. Mr Estock was there both times and help the kids, and a young coach, with encourging words.

Thank You

When I was a young boy, George made deliveries to our home for Johnson's Meat Market. When I learned he had pitched for the Braves, I always asked him questions about Spahn, Burdette and others. He couldn't have been nicer to me. What a gentleman! George and all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Coach Estock was a great man. I had the opportunity to coach with him at Sebastian River High School and it was truly a blessing. Every day he taught the kids a new lesson, not only on the diamond field, but in life. We will miss him.

For many years, George sent buckets of baseballs north to Jeff, who would pass them along to me for the Little League and Babe Ruth teams I coached. It's funny now that I think back--the kids on those teams never knew George, but he helped them tremendously. A nice illustration of the character of the man. Sincere condolences from the Kite family.

George and his wife Janet twice welcomed me into their home in order to interview George about his career in the American Association, when he played for the Milwaukee Brewers. His enthusiasm and warmth charmed me and I felt like I'd been his friend for a long time. He was one of the original subscribers to my baseball history publication, the American Association Almanac, and he always purchased a calendar from me every year. He was a champ both on and off the field and as far as I'm concerned he was a darned decent human being. He will be missed in a most poignant way and I will always think of him with the greatest reverence.
