Andrey A. Georgieff, MD

AGE: 93 • Wilmington

Andrey Georgieff, MD, age 93, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, April 22, 2014.

Dr. Georgieff was a well-known and respected family physician who practiced in the area for more than 50 years.

Andrey was born in Bulgaria where he finished Medical School and was drafted to serve in WWII. After the end of the war he left Bulgaria and embarked on a long journey through Czechoslovakia, France and the West Cost of the United States, finally settling in Wilmington, DE in 1961.

During his long career in family medicine and allergy, Dr. Georgieff cared for as many as three generations in a family. He was the consummate, dedicated, family physician, available for house calls and office visits at all times of the day and night. Long office hours did not keep him from seeing his patients at St. Francis and Wilmington General in the middle of the night. During his career he delivered the last baby in the old maternity unit and the first baby in the new maternity unit of St. Francis Hospital. He cared for his patients as he would a family member. His patients and his practice were his life.

Dr. Georgieff took a keen interest in young people and seeing them succeed. He wanted to ensure that opportunities available to him were also available to others by providing help, support and encouragement.

Andrey always wanted to learn new things, keeping up to date with the latest medical research and news. In his later years, Andrey enjoyed the company of many of his former patients who cared deeply about him.

Andrey is survived by his brother, Slavian Georgieff, MD; his sister-in-law, Klara; his niece, Irene; and cousins Iliana and Pepi Petkov, and Vessela and Ivan Laftchiev.

The family would like to thank the nurses, dear friends and family who were by Andrey's side in the last few months.

Family and friends are invited to visit at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 North Broom Street, Wilmington on Thursday, May 1 from 10 AM - 11 AM, with the Funeral Liturgy to follow. Entombment will be in All Saints Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Andrey may be made to St. Francis Hospital, 701 N. Clayton Street, Wilmington, DE 19805 or to .
