"Art" Grimes

Arthur W."Art" Grimes, 89, of Wilmington, DE passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Seasons Hospice Christiana Hospital, Newark, DE.

Born and raised in Bellefonte, DE, the son of the late Walter H. and Alice L. VanPelt Grimes. He attended Mt. Pleasant Schools and then graduated from P.S. DuPont High School. He spent the next 3 years in the US Air Force where he proudly served as an A.P. Armorer.

Art then became a Fire Fighter, both as a volunteer for the Brandywine Hundred Fire Company and as a member of the Wilmington Fire Bureau. Art rose to the rank of Lieutenant and retired in 1971 after 21 years. While a member of the Brandywine Hundred Fire Company, Art was a Fire Policeman, Assistant Chief and was a member of the Board of Directors. Art belonged to the VFW Post 2907 where he held several offices including Post Commander. He was a Lifetime member of the Bellefonte Town Commission and was active in the Boy Scouts of America as a Scout, Cub Master and Neighborhood commissioner. He received the order of Merit and the St. George Medal for outstanding work.

Art is a longtime member of St. Helena's Church where he was very active. He served as President of Young at Heart Group for 4 years. Art was a member of the Sellers Senior Center and was serving as active President of their Advisory Board.

Art was predeceased by his wife, Alice in 2007 and is survived by his daughter, Mary Alice Grimes; sons, Robert A.(Susan), Richard J. (Patti) and Arthur W. Grimes, Jr.; grandchildren, Susan (Bruce) Spartz, Brian (Denise) Grimes, Renee (Kevin) Bocarde, Sarah (Tripp) Oliver, Dorian Grimes; great grandchildren, Nicholas, Olivia and Bowie.

Contributions may be made in memory of Art to the Sellers Senior Center, 500 Duncan Rd., Wilmington, DE 19809 or Brandywine Hundred Fire Company, 1006 Brandywine Blvd., Wilmington, DE 19809.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 30th at 10:00 am at St. Helena's Church, Wilmington, DE. Family and friends may visit on Sunday, December 29th from 2 to 4:00 pm at the Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery, Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington, DE.
