Age 85, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully, in his home surrounded by family on Thursday, January 10, 2013. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in Germany after WWII, and was awarded Soldier of the Year. After his service in the Army, he married Phyllis Horn in December 1949. Burton was a self-employed Blacksmith and a member of the Journeyman Horseshoers Union. He worked for over 40 years at regional racetracks, finally retiring from Delaware Park in 1991. After retiring, he was employed by Dodd Dental Lab and Three Little Bakers Golf Course.
He enjoyed boating on the Indian River with his friends from the yacht club, was an avid sports fan enduring the Eagles, Phillies and U of DE football for many years. Pop enjoyed donating his time to Midway Little League, either coaching his grandchildren or eventually watching his great-grandchildren play. He was a manager and board member for Capital Trail Football League (Crusaders).
He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Phyllis Gregg in 2012.
Pop is survived by his daughters, Deborah Dodd (James) and Cynthia Mitchell; his grandchildren, Bill Chambers, Sherri Taylor-Brainard (Kevin), Elizabeth Kautz (David); and his great-grandchildren, Corey, Sarah, Kristen, Dylan, William and Nicholas.
A funeral service will be held at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Tuesday, January 22 at 11AM. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, January 21 from 5 to 7PM.
