Captain John G. Belian, age 81, of Fenwick Island, died Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. He was born on November 9, 1931 in Tresta, Italy and was the son of the late Giovanni and Maria (Fantoni) Belian.
John attended the University of Pisa and was a graduate of Widener University. He had worked for the Scott Paper Company, Sun Shipbuilding and the Raytheon Corporation. His memberships included, St. Ann Catholic Church, Chester Masonic Lodge 236, the Fenwick Island Yacht Club, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Fenwick Island Environmental Committee. He was also the founder and president of the Fenwick Island Fishing Club and a Board member of F.I.S.H.
John loved fishing, crabbing, netting, gardening, Fenwick Island and sharing his produce, fish and crabs. He taught people of all ages to fish and to care for the land and the waters given to them so that the environment could be protected. His love of life and the people he knew could be felt and seen in his eyes. His faithfulness will be missed by many people and animals.
He is survived by his wife Sophia Thomas of Fenwick Island; one daughter, Helene Placencia of Las Vegas, NV and two nieces, Susan Jacovy of Harrisburg, PA and Jessica Soles of Springfield, VA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, August 24 at 11:00 am at St. Ann Catholic Church, 691 Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach, DE 19930. Inurnment will be in Gate Of Heaven Cemetery in Dagsboro.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Philip Merrill Environmental Center, 6 Herndon Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403 or to the Town of Fenwick Island, 800 Coastal Highway, Fenwick Island, DE 19944 to be used to purchase a beach accessible wheelchair for handicapped individuals.
