Catherine Barry O'Connell

Catherine "Catty" O'Connell, 87, of Newark, Delaware was called home by the Lord on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. Born in Cork City, Ireland, Catty came to America with her family at the age of 4 in 1929.

Catty grew up in New York City and met the love of her life, Leo O'Connell at an Irish dance. Catty became both mother and father when Leo passed at the age of 41 leaving her to raise her clan of 8 children. Catty and her children moved to Delaware in 1969 where she enjoyed working with 5 of her children at various times at the Shop N Bag in Newark. Her greatest joy and pride was her family. Catty was proud of her Irish heritage and known for her singing and unique sense of humor.

Catty was predeceased by her husband, Leo; her parents, John and Elizabeth Barry; sister, Maura Henderson; and sister-in-law, Gertrude Barry. She is survived by her brothers, John Barry (Pat) and Liam Barry. Also surviving are her children, Patsy Bergeron (Dave), Bill (Shelly), John (Susanne), Betty Wiseman (Ronnie), Kathleen O'Connell, Peggy Wright (Garry), Kevin and Brian (Mary). She also leaves to cherish her memory 18 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, December 14 from 5-8 pm at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 15 at 10 am at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 2431 Frazier Rd., Newark, DE 19702. Burial will be private in Long Island National Cemetery, Long Island, NY.

The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the entire staff at Churchman Village Nursing Home for the loving care and kindness shown to our Mother during her time in their care.
