Cloyce (Whitey) Herman Heegard, age 93, passed away on February 28, 2013 at home in Newark, DE. Cloyce was born on September 3, 1919 in Park Rapids, Hubbard County, Minnesota to Marinus and Anna (Kjonass) Heegard. He was the youngest of twelve children.

Cloyce was on leave from the U.S. Army when he met the love of his life, Olive Reed. They met on a blind date on Christmas Eve 1943. A few weeks later, he was shipped out and landed on Anzio beachhead, Italy in February 1944. He was medically discharged (for the third time) from the Army in 1945. He settled in Delaware to marry Olive and begin their family. Cloyce and Olive celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on February 13, 2013.

Cloyce was a self-made, hard-working man. He was driven to provide for his family his entire life, working several jobs at a time when necessary. He retired twice; first from Gas & Oil Company and then from Allied Propane at the age of 81. Cloyce was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 615, recently serving as Junior Vice Commander.

In addition to his wife, Cloyce leaves two children, Bonnie Lee (James) Brown and Cloyce W. (Pat) Heegard, three grandchildren and three great granddaughters to cherish his memory.

The family would like to thank Meredith and the staff of Heartland Hospice House of Delaware for their guidance and support during such a difficult time. Thank you to Dr. David Scheid and Sue North of Internal Medicine Associates for helping us take such good care of Daddy over the years and specifically in the last several weeks. Our family will be forever grateful for the extra years we had with Pop as a result of such excellent care.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to VFW National Home for Children ( 3573 South Waverly Road, Eaton Rapids, MI 48827.
