AGE: 85 • Hockessin
Dale Astle, 85, of Hockessin, died January 23rd at home after a short illness. A native of Charleroi, PA, he was the son of Mildred (Yeates) and Ernest Astle. After high school, he attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and then entered the US Air Force, serving from 1948 - 1952, where he was trained as a draftsman and served in the 1140th USAF Special Activities Squadron stationed at the Pentagon.
He worked in advertising and public relations as a commercial artist and ran Astle Art Studio, first in Wilmington and then in Hockessin for many years. He illustrated Crawford Greenewalt's book Hummingbirds, published in 1966 to glowing reviews in the New York Times for its content and drawings. After retiring, he painted his grandchildren's portraits and Delaware scenery and landmarks, including Engine 98 of the Wilmington and Western Railroad. A history and aviation buff, he assembled models of and drew military aircraft. He and his late wife loved to travel. He was an avid reader and a classic movie fan.
He was predeceased by daughter, Susan Poulos, wife, Barbara S. Astle and grandson Richard DeMoss. He is survived by daughters, Janet Fender (Boyce) of Hockessin, Victoria DeMoss of Wilmington and grandchildren Greg Fender of San Francisco, Scott Fender and Shellie DeMoss, both of the Wilmington area.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 1 at 11 am at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek where friends may visit from 10-11. Interment will be private.
