Dan was born in 1924, the first child of the late Agnes Feeney and Daniel F. Shields, Jr. His family was among the original Irish powder men of the Eleutherian Mills. He was born, lived, worked and died in that tightly-knit community with Saint Joseph on the Brandywine and his faith at the center of his life. After the war, Dan returned home as a student at the University of Delaware and joined his family business Shields Lumber & Coal Company, until his retirement as President of Shields Development Co. in 1986. Dan was a respected and beloved business leader in the Wilmington community throughout his life.

Dan was predeceased by his parents and brothers, William and John and his sister, Rosemary ("Co" Moran) as well as his stepmother, Virginia. He is survived by his cherished wife, Beatrice F. Shields and his son, Daniel (Brenda) and daughter Virginia ("Gigi" Slattery) (Spencer) along with his dear grandchildren: Aubrey, Camilla, Heather, Cricket and Spencer; and countless treasured nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Joseph on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Road in Greenville, Delaware, Friday, June 28 at 10:30 am. Visitation will be held at the church Friday morning prior to Mass beginning at 9 am.
