Don Raymond Kuespert Obituary
Don Raymond

On September 3, 2013, Don Raymond Kuespert died at Kendal at Longwood following a stroke at the age of 83. Born in South Bend, Indiana to Ruth Staples and Raymond Dewey Kuespert, Don was an honor student and Eagle Scout, who regularly performed magic shows as a teenager. At Purdue University, Don belonged to several honor societies, was active in the University Presbyterian Church and earned a BS in Chemical Engineering in 1952.

After joining DuPont that year, Don began at Chambers Works in the Elastomers Department, living in Wilmington, Delaware at the University and Whist Club. He continued work in Elastomers serving the rubber industry after transfer to Akron, Ohio in 1953. There he met Marjorie Godard; they married in April 1954, and enjoyed 25 years together in Wilmington before Marjorie's death in 1980. They raised their three children and instilled in them a love of travel, volunteering, and lifelong searching for knowledge.

Don's 38-year DuPont career required worldwide travel as he conducted extensive Delphi studies, and drove new product development and sales promotion, until his retirement in 1990.

In 1968, the family built a contemporary home in the Meadows in Centreville, around which Don tirelessly built dry-laid stone walls, and landscaped and nurtured a huge woodland wildflower garden, fruit orchard, and specimen foliage. His deep interest in world history culminated in preparing a book, complete with timelines and maps. In 1983, Don married Cynthia Henderson Burt and successfully blended and guided their two families with love, wisdom and friendship.

Don's lifelong commitment to peace work and Christian education was realized as an early member of and 25 year volunteer to Pacem In Terris, which awarded him its 2003 Peacemaker Among Us Award. At Westminster Presbyterian, he taught and served as Elder and Trustee. At higher levels of Presbyterian Church/USA, Don pursued financial, peace and justice issues, chairing the Synod's Stewardship of Accumulated Resources Committee and General Assembly peace efforts. He represented PC/USA to the Interfaith Council on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) for 10 years, and helped promote the socially significant power of shareholding in the national Mission Responsibility Through Investment (MRTI). Don served as president of the Coniston Residents Association and was a member of Greenville Country Club.

Don was also predeceased by his son Paul Raymond in 1974, and is survived by his wife Cynthia, his children Jonathan Godard and Jeanne Kuespert Roberts; stepchildren David H. Burt and Dr. John W. Burt; daughters-in-law Paula Kurata Kuespert and Audrey Whiteside Burt; son-in-law James Roberts; grandsons Evan Whiteside Burt, Matthew Henderson Burt, Logan Paul Kuespert and Zachary Godard Kuespert; sister and brother-in-law Kathryn and Charles Huffman; and eight nephews and five nieces.

Services will be held on Sunday, September 15 at 2:30 PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be contributed to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1502 W. 13th St., Wilmington, DE 19806, or the Peace Drums Project c/o Delaware Community Foundation, PO Box 1636, Wilmington, DE 19899.
