Born July 15, 1916, resident of Lewes DE, passed away on July 28, 2012.
She was the wife of the late Charles Maurice Lewis and is survived by her son Maurice B. Lewis; Julie Lewis her beloved daughter-in-law; and granddaughters: Kristina Ann Sullivan and Michelle Lynn Jeram. She is also survived by two sons-in-law: James A. Sullivan and Peter Jeram; five great-grandchildren: James A. Sullivan, Mathew R. Sullivan, Megan M. Sullivan, Samuel F. Jeram and Olivia Dorothy Jeram.
She was the daughter of William and Dora Richter, with one brother William Richter and three sisters, Marion Terriss, Helen Sypherd and Lois Frase. Mrs. Lewis was born in Merrill Wisconsin and moved to Dover Delaware at the age of nine.
Mrs. Lewis served as a Captain in the US Army and was the leader of the Normandy Nightingales, a group of 18 Army nurses who in combat conditions treated wounded Allied soldiers on Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion of France. Her distinguished military career included being decorated with the Bronze Star for Valor. After leaving the Army she married and worked with her husband developing Loring Hill Orchards, apple and peach orchards, outside of Gerrardstown and Martinsburg, West Virginia. The Lewis' retired in 1974, moving to Henlopen. Acres, Delaware. At the time of her death, Mrs. Lewis was a resident at Cadbury at Lewes.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 20276 Bay Vista Road, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where visiting will begin at 10:00 AM, with a luncheon in the church hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions may be made to the Lutheran Church of Our Savior at the above address.
