Edgar Lester Batzel
The Guest Book is expired.
Our dear beloved husband, father, grandfather "poppy" and great grandfather Edgar Lester Batzel passed away May 9, 2013 at Seasons Hospice in the presence of his family.
Edgar was born April 8, 1935 to Laura and Lester Batzel of Lake Ariel, PA and graduated from Lake Ariel High School, Pennsylvania in 1953.
Edgar is survived by his wife Virginia Claire Morgan, whom he met at a civil air patrol meeting and married in January, 1956. Edgar is survived by his four children Stephen Edgar Batzel (deceased), Brenda Lee Batzel, Cynthia Elizabeth Chalfant and husband John Chalfant (deceased), and Sharon Rose Landry and her husband Rich Landry. His family continued to expand with his grand children, John Batzel, Elizabeth Procak, Andrew Chalfant and Greg Chalfant, Jennifer Landry and Laura Landry and 4 great grand children Madison (9), twins MaKayla and Makenzie (11 months) and Juliana Procak (7 months).
Edgar was a very successful businessman starting his own heavy equipment construction company in 1962 as the E L Batzel company which continued for 50 years, specializing in Gradalls. Most notably was his work for the Corp of Engineers repairing rip rap stone along the C & D canal for 25 years. He was instrumental in excavating many roads within New Castle County and up and down the East coast. During many winter months, Edgar also plowed snow for the State of Delaware with his own equipment on I-95.
Edgar was a very generous man and always there to educate and help with family and friends.
In 1965, Edgar obtained his private pilot's license. After renting planes for 5 years, Edgar's dream of owning his own plane became a reality when he purchased a Cessna 182 Skyline in 1970. As a family, we travelled many places and scouted out possible work along the banks of the Chesapeake Bay.
When the family outgrew the plane, Edgar purchased a 33" Egg Harbor boat. We named her Ginny B II and kept her 34 years. Edgar and Virginia have boated mainly in the Chesapeake Bay but have travelled as far up as the Erie Canal and down the Bay to Virginia. They were involved with the Salem Yacht club, where Edgar was a commodore. We have met many wonderful and dear friends over the years.
Then after all the toys were gone we celebrated our 50th anniversary with a cruise on the Queen Mary to the Mediterranean. We have met a lot of dear friends throughout our 57 years of marriage. He did love life and he will be missed by his family and friends.
