Age 88, of Asheville, died peacefully at home on Sunday, January 13, 2013. His loving daughter Ann and son-in-law, Bob were at his side as he stepped into the presence of the Lord.

He is survived by Geneva, his wife of 22 years; daughters Martha Shurts, Ann Tatlock, and Carol Hodies; granddaughter, Laura Jane Tatlock; sons-in-law Bob Blank and Eric Hodies; step-daughters Sharon Latson and Pam Tribble; step-sons, Wayne and Steve Craig, as well as numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was born November 28, 1924, in Dayton, Ohio, the son of Roswell Blaine Shurts and Irene Hoppe Shurts. He married Jane Elizabeth Tatlock of Rochester, NY, on June 13, 1953. He remained a faithful and loving husband until her death in 1985.
Raised in Baltimore, MD, he graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1942. He was drafted in 1943 and earned eight battle stars for six months of combat in the Battles of Leyte and Okinawa during World War II. He served as a geodetic computer in the 287th Field Artillery Observation Battalion.
In 1955 he earned a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan. He worked the next 28 years for E.I. DuPont in Wilmington, DE, as a Senior Consultant in the Evaluations Group of the Engineering Department. He was a pioneer in the use of mainframe computers in the design of chemical plants.
A servant at heart, he and his wife Jane traveled as missionaries to Southeast Asia in 1983, even smuggling Bibles into mainland China. He was a Presbyterian Elder of two churches in Wilmington DE, and one in Fairview, NC. He volunteered for 15 years in the Delaware State Prison and 10 years for ABCCM at the Crisis Center and Homeless Shelter. He has been a member of the Asheville Lions Club since 1988. He has enjoyed the fellowship of Beverly Hills Baptist Church since 2002.
He enjoyed playing duplicate bridge with his wife Geneva at the Asheville Bridge Room and was a bronze life master.
A memorial service will be held at Beverly Hills Baptist Church on Saturday, January 26 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Billy King officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in Mason, OH.
