Antrim Mearns

Frances (Biddie) Antrim Mearns, of Wilmington, DE, age 84 years young, passed peacefully in her sleep after a busy week visiting with family on December 31, 2012 at Sunrise Senior Living retirement community.

Born in Greensboro, NC in 1928, she was the daughter of Frank Templeton Antrim and Ruby Groome. She attended James Madison University and graduated with a BS in Biology and Chemistry. Her first job was as a chemical librarian for the DuPont Company.

In 1949, she met and later married Andrew Kirkpatrick Mearns, Jr., a Wilmington businessman. They were blessed with four children: Drew Mearns of Wilmington, DE; Cyndi Thoma of Palm Bay, FL; Margaret Wells of Wilmington, DE; and Frank Antrim Mearns of San Diego, CA.

Biddie was an energetic woman, always smiling and providing support to family and friends. She was an active member of the Delaware Art Museum, a longtime choir member at Westminster Presbyterian Church, a Junior League member, and an avid tennis player and fan. Winterthur Museum was a special place for her where she spent many years as a floral designer. Biddie surrounded herself with beauty, especially in her home where she paid close attention to details. Her love of art, and flowers was appreciated by many. You could often find her creating in her garden.

Biddie and her husband Kirk were charter members of the Greenville Country Club since 1961. She loved entertaining friends, spent several years wintering in Vero Beach, FL and had very special memories in Lewes Beach, DE.

In addition to her parents, Frank Antrim and Ruby Groome, Biddie was preceded in death by her two sisters, Mary Katherine Moore and Elizabeth Antrim Thrower. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Andrew "Kirk". Mearns, Jr; sons Drew Mearns and wife JoAnne, Frank Mearns and wife Barbie; daughters Maggie Wells and husband Rob, and Cyndi Thoma and her husband Frank. Biddie was a loving grandmom to Elizabeth Mearns Gutierrez, Andrew K. Mearns IV, Nathan Wells, James Wells, Marina Wells, Sophie Mearns and Samantha Mearns.

There will be a graveside service on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 11:00 am at Lower Brandywine Cemetery, 101 Old Kennett Road, Wilmington, DE 19807 on Route 52 in Greenville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1502 West 13th Street, Wilmington, DE 19806.
