Schmittinger

"Larry"

On November 19, 2012, Larry died peacefully after a short but valiant fight against pancreatic cancer.

Larry was born on April 13, 1947, in Wilmington, DE to the late May R. and Harold P. Schmittinger. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Harold and Jay; and his sister, Lorraine. He grew up in Dover and graduated from Dover High School in 1966. He lovingly shared many fond memories of those years. He then attended the University of Delaware before beginning his long and successful career as a financial advisor. His career was made that much richer by the many clients that became lifelong friends. Larry went on to open his own investment office, from which he recently retired, and moved to Lewes, DE, accomplishing a lifelong desire to live at the beach.

Larry had an uncanny knack for drawing people into his ever-growing circle of friends. His ability to tell a story or a joke will long be remembered by all. Always the consummate host, you never left his home hungry, "thirsty", or without laughter in your heart. He loved his weekly card games, his motorcycle trips all around this country, Canada and Europe, and his boat. In retirement, he was also able to pursue his interest in writing.

Larry will be sorely missed by his loving family: his devoted partner of sixteen years, Karen Hnatowski and her family; his three children, Jennifer McBride (Andrew), Hayley Skibo (Zak) and Ryan Schmittinger (Bree); his six grandchildren, Ryan, Luke, Noah, Kate, Ella and Jonah; his nieces and nephews; and countless friends. To know Larry was to love Larry.

A visitation will be held at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Friday, November 23 from 6:00 - 8:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Cedar and S. Clayton Streets, Wilmington on Saturday, November 24 at Noon. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Larry be made to the , 92 Reads Way, New Castle, DE 19720.
