George R. Fawkes, Jr., of Claymont, DE, died on Sunday, February 10, 2013. He was 92-years old.
He was born in Mason City, IA, to parents George Robert Fawkes, Sr. and Lottie Evans. Fawkes was the youngest of six children: two brothers, Emerson and Donald, and three sisters, Virginia, Meribe, and Beverly.
He is survived by three children: George R. Fawkes, III, Valerie L. Earll, and Joan M. DiCandilo; two stepsons: David Canfield and Douglas Canfield; five grandchildren: Jennifer M. Prakash, Lauren E. DiCandilo, Joseph H. Canfield, Brian D. Canfield, and Kimberly Canfield; and one great grandchild: Sanjay R. Prakash.
He was the husband of the late Carol Canfield, of Claymont, DE.
Fawkes earned his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University, Ames, IA. As a student at Iowa State, he was part of a team that worked on the development of the first digital computer.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Fawkes worked as an aeronautical engineer for General Electric from 1942 until his retirement in 1984. During his professional career, he was a key member of teams that worked on the development and use of sonar and participated in the Manhattan Project, the top-secret project that produced the first atomic bombs.
In the GE aerospace division, Fawkes participated in numerous programs in developing satellites for the U.S. government/U.S. military.
Fawkes was active in the membership at Hanover Presbyterian Church, participating in projects such as the Clothes Closet and the Food Pantry. He served as Treasurer of the local AARP chapter. He was also a mathematics tutor for local high school students.
A Celebration of his Life will be held this Sunday, February 17, at 3:00 P.M. at Forwood Manor, 1912 Marsh Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810. Flowers may be sent to Forwood Manor at the above address.
