Gladys F. O'Brien

Gladys F. O'Brien, age 101, passed away peacefully at her home in the presence of her daughter and her caregiver. The daughter of the late Evie Crickenbarger Flint and Clinton Obediah Flint, she was born at the home of her paternal grandparents in Stony Point, Albermarle County, VA.

Gladys is predeceased by her husband, Joseph Phillip O'Brien, who was killed in 1944 on the Western front near Aachen, Germany; and by her twin brothers, William Oswald Flint and Clinton Obediah Flint. She is survived by her daughter, Maureen O'Brien Quimby of Kennett Square, PA; her grandson, Sean MacLeod Quimby, his wife Lisa Quimby, and great-granddaughter, Allegra Camille Quimby of Syracuse, NY; and by grandson, Patrick Graham Quimby, formerly of Phoenix, AZ, and currently of Kennett Square, PA; and by twin great-granddaughters, Emma Margaret Quimby and Fiona MacLeod Quimby, of Moraga, CA, as well as a niece, nephews and cousins.

She graduated from John Marshall High School in Richmond, VA, and moved with her family to Washington, DC, during the Depression. Gladys graduated from Washington School for Secretaries and had a long career in the Federal Government beginning as a clerk in 1934 at Federal Housing Administration (later the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs). Working her way up to a position as Mortgagee Approval Officer, she retired in 1973, to care for her mother and to spend time with her grandchildren.

Gladys was devoted to her daughter and her much beloved family to whom she dedicated her life. As an early working mother, she was an inspiration to her daughter in a time when stay-at-home mothers were the norm. Throughout her lifetime, Gladys was the embodiment of style and grace.

The family gives special thanks to Gladys' devoted caregivers, Alma Schmuck, Jean Thompson, and Ruth George, to the wonderful and caring staff of Heartland Hospice, all of whom provided invaluable support in seeing Gladys through the final phase of her life on earth. And special thanks to caring and thoughtful friends.

A funeral with Holy Eucharist will take place at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, at 11 am on Friday, December 21. A reception in the parish hall will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Church, Box 3510, 505 East Buck Rd., Wilmington, DE 19807. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a time to be determined.
