Jacob E. Schumacher

Age 94, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2012.

Mr. Schumacher was born in Stevenson, MD and attended Cretin Military Academy. In 1939 he graduated from the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN with a BS degree in chemistry and received a MS degree in chemistry from Perdue University. In 1941 he went to work for the DuPont Co. in the patent service section of the Textile Fibers Dept. and transferred to the Niagara Falls Electrochemicals Dept. as a research chemist a year later. In May of 1947 he married the former Helen L. Miller. He continued with the DuPont Co. in various positions and in 1952 was appointed vinyl products sales manager and came to Wilmington. Mr. Schumacher held several managerial positions in the Production Division and the Personnel and Industrial Relations Division and was named director of the Biochemicals Dept. in 1981. He retired in 1983 becoming active in antique purchasing, selling and consulting. He was treasurer of J & H Antiques and operated the business with his wife, Helen, in Vermont and Delaware. He was a member of St. Mary Magdalen Church.

Mr. Schumacher was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Helen L. Schumacher, who died in 2006 and his son, R. Gordon Schumacher in 2004. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Kathryn Schumacher of Dunbarton, NH; a sister, Ida Lauer of St. Paul, MN and 7 grandchildren,

The Mass and burial will be private. Friends may call on the family Friday, December 21 from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at the MCCRERY & HARRA FUNERAL HOMES, 3924 Concord Pk., Wilmington, DE
